TSMC $2330beats estimates thanks to NVIDIA
- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the world's largest contract manufacturer of semiconductors, reported a jump in revenue in the fourth quarter of 2024 to T$868.42 billion (USD 26.36 billion).
- The company thus exceeded market estimates of T$853.57 billion (USD 25.90 billion) and confirmed its own forecast at the same time.
- The increase in sales was largely driven by the growing demand for AI applications.
- Compared to the same period last year, when sales amounted to USD 19.62 billion, this corresponds to a strong increase of 34.4%.
- In December alone, TSMC recorded sales of T$278.16 billion, which corresponds to growth of 57.8% compared to the same month last year.
- TSMC, whose customers include Apple and Nvidia, is benefiting greatly from the global trend towards artificial intelligence.
- While demand for semiconductors for consumer electronics - such as tablets - slowed down after the pandemic, the boom in AI-based technologies compensated for this decline and strengthened TSMC's market position in the long term.
- TSMC will present its full fourth quarter results and outlook for the current year on January 16.
Novo Nordisk $NOVO B (+0.55%)expands AI partnership with Valo
- Valo Health, a US-based technology company, announced on January 8 that it will expand its existing agreement with Novo to develop new treatments for cardiometabolic diseases using AI and personal data.
- In September 2023, Novo and Valo had already signed an agreement to develop 11 drugs.
- The expanded agreement now provides for collaboration on the development of up to 20 new treatments for obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
- Last month, one of Novo's drug candidates, CagriSema, showed lower-than-expected weight loss in clinical trials, affecting the company's plans to launch a successor to its popular weight-loss drug Wegovy.
- Novo is working to develop an even more effective weight-loss drug than Eli Lilly's.
- Analysts estimate that the market for anti-obesity drugs will reach a volume of 150 billion dollars in the next decade.
