AMD and Intel also have competition for PCs: Nvidia actually wants to launch its own processors for Windows on ARM.
It has long been rumored, but now Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang has confirmed it: Nvidia is working with Mediatek to design processors for devices with Windows on ARM. In a round of analysts, he was explicitly asked about desktop PCs - but notebooks with Nvidia CPUs are also likely to appear. The US news agency Reuters reported on the meeting.
Nvidia already has a blueprint for PC processors: the so-called Project Digits - a mini PC for AI developers - contains a powerful combination processor with 20 ARM cores and a Blackwell GPU.
Model Project Digits
Although Nvidia calls the CPU Grace, as with its server hardware, the two models have almost nothing in common: Project Digits contains ten ARM cores of the Cortex-X925 and Cortex-A725 type. The cores themselves come from ARM, the associated CPU design from Mediatek and the GPU part from Nvidia.
On paper, the processor would also be suitable for desktop PCs and notebooks. The Cortex-X925 promises high single-threading performance, which would be important for games, among other things. Practical for this: Nvidia has mature graphics drivers, which should cause fewer problems than with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X.
Huang also confirms that other manufacturers will be able to buy the processors for their own devices. The usual suspects can therefore design their own PCs and notebooks. Nvidia is explicitly targeting Windows on ARM together with the Windows subsystem for Linux.
